A Very FUNNY Read--especially if you are thinking you need to drop a few pounds in 2014!

 The funniest thing that I read in 2013 was from a newspaper clipping that I took off the cupboard door at Aunt Lavada’s house. The article was entitled : The Secret of Losing Weight: A successful dieter offers 15 tips for frustrated fatties (1956) by Mae Eanes {She is pictured here--Minus 40 pounds after two years' dieting--5'8" and 125 lbs}

1. Get the scales out of the bathroom. Put them in front of the refrigerator—not to one side where you can sneak around them, but right smack in front so you’ll have to stand on them before opening the refrigerator door.

2. Paste reminders in strategic places. For women, a picture of a model in a bathing suit. For men, a picture of a model in a bathing suit.

3. Avoid the company of thin people who complain loudly that no matter what they eat, they can’t gain an ounce. Also avoid very fat people, who can make the dieter feel slender by comparison.

4. Keep loose change in your pocket-- amounts matching the calories you consume. When you’ve “spent” it all, quit eating for the day. (This is harder for women because they rarely have two pockets on anything.)

5. Tell your friends you’re dieting. They’ll be bored to death, but you won’t have the nerve to eat in front of them.

6. Torture yourself: read recipe books containing rich, foreign specialties. But prepare none of them; don’t even keep the ingredients in the house. This will give you a feeling of self-righteousness which would be spoiled by eating.

7. If you are happily married, insist that your spouse call you”fatty” at appropriate intervals. (Not recommended for quick tempered dieters.)

8. Never go grocery shopping on an empty stomach. Never take much money with you when you go shopping.

9. *MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE* Try on clothing one size smaller than what you are wearing now. The expression on the clerk’s face—not to mention your reflection in the mirror—should haunt you for some time.

10. If you have a friend who’s also trying to diet, show yourself off as a shining example, eating lightly while he or she stuffs. It may make your friend hate you, but in the long run it will keep you in line. (It also might make your friend see the value of the stick-to-your-diet game, thus helping two people instead of one.)

11. Don’t use large plates at dinner. Small amounts of food on large plates are demoralizing. Use small plates. What food you can eat will show up better.

12. While watching TV, keep a bowl of cracked ice alongside your chair. Suck on it—don’t chew it or you’ll endanger your teeth. Cracked ice substitutes for pretzels or popcorn.

13. Don’t think that chewing gum and mints are food substitutes. The former may only make you hungry. The latter are loaded with calories.

14. *THIS ONE IS NOT GOOD ADVICE* Don’t give up smoking when you start to diet. You’ll feel sorry for yourself and only eat more.

15. Before dieting, some people claim they are helped by having one big final fling. They get sick on whole jars of olives, stacks of pork chops, cake a la mode. The effect may last for the first few days of dieting—which is really the critical period.

Those are some of the rules of the game. As in any game, the player can step out of bounds. Tapping the tops of cookie jars or hiding chocolates is not considered sporting.

By looking at Aunt Lavada and Aunt Imogene, you wouldn't guess that they had to worry about dieting at all. I know they worked hard, but since they posted this on their cupboard after they moved in the early 80's, I'm guessing that they took some of her advise to heart.

Dedicated to Mothers of Littles

We are going through the difficult process of sorting and dispersing household items from my parents home.  I found a manila envelope with my name on it in my Mom's closet.  Because I had a long list of other things to do while I was there, I saved examining the contents until I got home. The treasure I found inside you can read here.  I'm so thankful that I shared this with my mother because I don't think I have it written anywhere else.  The years fly my friends, capture it in words, if you can.  I love you and am whispering more prayers for you than you will ever know.

The Interrupties
Thoughts of a mother of young children

From the early morning hours my sleep is broken
By a little precious child who's just awoken
When just slipping back to the dreamy stage
That crazy alarm goes off in quite a rage.

It's another one of those days--bright and sunny.
Gotta hurry now, or it won't be funny.
Eggs and ham on my husband's plate
Quick, wake up Shane or he'll be late.

"Good morning Mom" Joel hollers from his bed
Courteney walks sleepily holding his head.
"Get my breakfast, change my clothes,
Hurry come quick and blow my nose."

As the day progresses I think I'll get something done,
But before I get dressed the realtor's come.
I start to give Tyler his bath, but before I'm through,
Joel spills his milk, now what should I do?

Things once again get settle down and the mess is cleared away
Tyler gets his cereal, but the phone, a reporter did she say?
"Steve? He's not home, at noon? Maybe."
I'll be taking lunch to the field--she'd like to come, could she?!

A snooze for Tyler, Mom starts on the lawn
Oh no! Now where has that silly dog gone?
There's trash on the yard, the dog's in the field,
When will all these efforts bring forth a yield?

"What have I done today?" I often ask myself
Changing, feeding and potty training--the rest goes on the shelf.
Sand's on the floor, there's footprints on the door
Those dishes still in the sink--oh what a chore!

The day's at an end with the laundry on the couch
It's no wonder I'm always such a grouch!
The rug hasn't been vacuumed for weeks I could guess.
Courteney said, "Can I dust?"--I gladly answered YES!

These times, they keep me busy
Seems I'm always in a tizzy!
But when these days are said and done
I'll convince myself it was all such fun!

This Year's Blessings--The Short Version

Steve and I celebrated 28 years of marriage in 2011, while Steve's parents marked 60 years together.  We celebrated together with the siblings in Detroit in June. Steve and the boys traveled to Louisville, KY for the Farm Show and toured the Slugger's Museum while there. Whitney traveled to Japan in April for six weeks. We welcomed Abby Klopfenstein to our family circle when she became engaged to Tyler in May.  Steve and I traveled to TX for church.  We have enjoyed weddings and trips to the lakes, time with family and friends. Cecily graduated with a BS in nursing and passed her boards in August.  Jane's Mom turned 90 on November 25th and the family said good-bye to her brother, Virgil, in July.  Whitney is a senior and had surgery this month to repair a torn ACL--volleyball injury.  Besides volleyball she has enjoyed art classes, drama, piano lessons, ski trips, family and girls camps, babysitting and keeping in touch with friends. We finished harvesting in December this year!  God is Faithful and WE BELIEVE in the gift of JESUS!
Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!

Christmas time is coming

The season is upon us. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration in Bay City with my family. We also celebrated my mom's 89th birthday. There were twenty-two of us together at my Mom's and we were in touch with my oldest brother from the Netherlands over the phone. My youngest brother hosted my nephew and his wife from northern California at his house in Oregon. It seems like I have been barely keeping my head above water and haven't had much time for reading or writing blogs, but when we took our Christmas pictures a couple of weeks ago, I knew just which one had to go on my blog to replace last years shot. I ordered the real ones that you will get in the mail last night, but isn't fun to see us how we really are!!! Enjoy each little thing you choose to do as you celebrate this season of Christ's birth. What is your favorite part your Christmas preparations?

A Night in Paris

Bridal Shower Kyle Fiechter and Tricia Plattner are getting married tomorrow morning. A couple of weeks ago we had an all church singing shower for them in Leo. It was entitled "A Night in Paris". For some of us, that is the closest we may ever get. Thanks to some creative and energetic members on the committee, we had the little cafe scene that you see here where Kyle and Trish sat. They sipped on coffee while Tyler interviewed them and they shared their story. We served French style deserts with coffee, and iced mint tea. To add to the ambiance we dressed up a little. This is Eden, Trent and Heidi Schrock's daughter. And, of course, Tyler, who donned French style facial hair. The added barret and scarf finished it off well. We had some special musical numbers by Connie Beer and Jenny Sauder, accompanied by Connie's son Shane. Also, Erica Sauder sang, accompanied by Tyler and Cecily. This is Heidi.
I had another chance to wear my Easter hat, since this is definitely a very French look.
Here is the committee, along with Shane.
